Well look before you leap. In the kitchen splatted a big fat horsefly on the window, and then looked at the flyswat. Ah not a horsefly at all! It was in fact Leucozona lucorum, a very large hoverfly. A beneficial insect which eats aphids and is a great pollinator.
And not one to kill. I’m afraid two weeks of being eaten alive by insects around the common ridings (five hundred horses at the front door have this effect) may have clouded my judgement.
Never been much of a one for invertebrates, but I’m enjoying learning.
