Sleep

Without which we are lost

Sleep is such an important part of our lives. Without adequate rest we ultimately go mad.

But what of dreams?

What of the unknown ‘other world’ we visit in our sleep. How much sleep do we all need? Individually or collectively. A fascinating topic.

Never to be underestimated.

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep little darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby

I remember my tone deaf father singing it to my with great affection but there more words which he didn’t know and never sang, though I did to my children when I learnt it (perhaps incorrectly)

The original was written by the Elizabethan English dramatist Thomas Dekker in his play Patient Grisel in 1599. He didn’t get a good press from contemporaries but for a simple song to endure over four hundred years (even if amended) indicates to me he touched on a very important part of the human soul.

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty wantons; do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby:
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

Care is heavy, therefore sleep you;
You are care, and care must keep you;
Sleep, pretty wantons; do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby:
Rock them, rock them, lullaby

Shamelessly stolen by the Beatles many years later.

Is anyone stealing your sleep?

Any thoughts on the topic gladly welcomed to stimulate further research
