Elder
Sambucus Nigra
Elder is large, bushy shrub or small tree growing up to 6m tall. Elder has pinnate leaves which turn pale yellow in the autumn. In early summer there are flat sprays of fragrant cream flowers which can be harvested to make wine or cordial. The bark is light grey when young, and changes to a coarse with deep lengthwise furrowing. In the autumn the tree produces bunches of small black berries which make a rich red wine or can be cooked to make jam/jelly.
Elders are easy to grow in most well-drained soils and also thrives on extremely chalky sites.
