Pruning Courses

Knowing how to prune trees and shrubs is an essential skill for any gardener and is particularly valuable in forest gardens.

Pruning is the selective removal of parts of a plant, maybe branches, buds or roots.

There are many reasons to prune. Plants can be pruned to remove deadwood, to improve their shape, to improve plant health, reduce the risk from falling branches, preparing nursery specimens for transplanting, and both harvesting and increasing the yield or quality of flowers and fruits.

Specialized pruning practices are applied to certain plants, such as roses, fruit trees, and grapevines. Different pruning techniques may be deployed on herbaceous plants than those used on perennial woody plants. And since pruning techniques vary depending upon the season so we offer courses at 3 different times of year so that you can learn all that you need to know to keep your plants fit and healthy and to maximise cropping.

To register an interest in learning more about pruning courses, contact graham@grahambell.org or sign up to our newsletter in order to receive regular updates about forthcoming courses.  Generally speaking these are best done after leaf fall and before March the following year.

We are usually pruning at Garden Cottage, Coldstream Wednesdays and Saturdays during that period.  and can welcome learners on these days by arrangement.  Payment by agreement.

Please note: all pruning days are subject to weather conditions and may be cancelled at short notice.

  1. Hi, I’m interested in a few things you do but probably the one I have the most need of is the restorative pruning course. Could you let me know if you’ll be running it again this winter? Thank you.
